The Kodenkan of Tucson teaches a wide variety of traditional and modern martial arts styles including Karate, Jujitsu, Judo, Kung Fu, Batto-do (Japanese Sword), Hiraido (Mixed Martial Arts/MMA) and Lil’Dragons. With classes for children, teens, adults, and seniors, we have something for just about every member of the family!

We are very fortunate to have over 21 dedicated black belt instructors who have a total of over 268 years of combined martial arts experience. With their many years of knowledge and training, they truly enjoy passing on the knowledge that has been taught to them.

Picacho Peak was often used as a landmark by early explorers. During the 17th century, dedicated Jesuit priest Father Kino mentioned Picacho Peak in records of his journeys into Arizona, and in 1775, the DeAnza Expeditions passed by the Peak. In 1846, the Mormon Battalion, on their way to California to fight in the war with Mexico, constructed a wagon road through Picacho Pass. The forty-niners traveled the same road on their way to California, and in 1858, mail and passengers traveled this route via the Butterfield Overland Stage. This route is now used by the Transcontinental Railroad.
Tucson is truly a hiker's paradise!

Here, we are surrounded with unique hiking opportunities to suit all seasons. The imposing granite faces north of campus are the Santa Catalinas and include scenic Sabino Canyon and Mount Lemmon, a favorite getaway from the summer heat. The rugged Rincons lie looming in the east. The gentle Tucson range west of campus is a good place to watch the sunset on summer evenings. The Santa Ritas, further south, include Mount Wrightson, which at 9453 feet is the highest point near Tucson. Each of these major ranges is less than an hour's drive from campus.

We also make longer trips to places outside Tucson, such as the Chiricahuas, Pinacate preserve in Mexico, and the Grand Canyon.

The Ramblers are one of the oldest continuous clubs on the University of Arizona campus. The club creates a campus-wide resource for outdoor enthusiasts by providing resources, expertise, and a forum for people to meet so the outdoor world is accessible and fun for everyone. Hiking Club activities vary from educational speakers about wilderness camping and hiking safety, to short day hikes in nearby desert and mountain areas, to extended backpack, camping, and canyoneering trips, with the occasional spelunking thrown in.

All club activities are open to the public; as such, we do not require members to pay dues. The only costs associated with the Hiking Club are personal and group expenses such as fuel, equipment, permit fees, and the like. Camping equipment, books and maps arealso available for loan to members.

Ramblers is a member-driven club, i.e., all hikes are planned by individual members on their own initiative. The more people plan hikes, the better the club becomes; so, if there is a hike you would like to do, then by all means either plan it or request help in planning it by posting to the listserv.

Note that, since Ramblers hikes are planned and led by individual members, Ramblers cannot guarantee that hike leaders are experienced in group leadership or first aid. Members who come on a hike advertised on the listserv do so at their own risk; beginning hikers should not sign up for hikes which are lengthy and/or deep in the wilderness. In case of any questions, communicate with the trip leader by email before the hike starts.
